Edmund Finally sees Dimitri (National airdate Sept. 8, 1999)
after accusing alexandraandra of killing his brother, Edmund threatens to call in the police.   alexandra is then forced to admit to him that Dimitri is really alive and being treated at Seaview Hospital.  this scene opens with the two arriving at the hospital.

Edmund (anxious):  "what room is Dimitri in?"

Alexandra:   "He's in the annex. it's more private for him."

Edmund:  "Okay. Take me to him."

Alexandra:  "Oh, yeah. Be patient."

Edmund:  "No, I can't be patient. I just found out my brother's alive. Now I want to see him."

Alexandra:  "You will, you will."

Edmund (impatiently):   "Fine, Alexandra. You don't tell me, I'll find somebody who will."

Alexandra:   "well, they can't help you. He's not on the patient roster.  He's under an assumed name."

Edmund:  "You really covered all your bases, didn't you?"

Alexandra:   "Yes. Dr. Silbert knows you're here, and he'll advise us if there's been any change in Dimitri's Condition."

Edmund (angry):   "You know, all this time I was... I was grieving for my brother and telling the kids, and all this time he was here, alive."

Alexandra:  "You do realize that the disease has taken a tremendous toll on him."

Edmund:  "You said he was getting better."

Alexandra:   "Another reason that we've been so cautious is that the drug we're using hasn't been approved the F.D.A."

Edmund:  "Yeah, but he was responding, right?"

Alexandra:   "Well, yes, there's been some improvment, but it..."  (She stops as Dr, Silbert comes up to them.)  "Dr. Silbert. It's good of you to see us."

Dr. Silbert (addressing Edmund):  "Mr. Grey, I apologize for the subterfuge. Dr. Devane felt, and I agreed, that given the Severity of your brother's conditionn, we felt that it was import..."

Edmund (cuts him off, not interested in Silbert's explaination):  "I think you should just take me to see my brother."

Dr. Silbert:   "Well, he's sleeping at the moment. Now, when he wakes up he's going to be disoriented, agitated. If you could wait just a few more days..."

Edmund (angrily):   "No! I want to see my brother now."

Alexandra:  "I know you're angry, but we're trying to do what's best for Dimitri."

Edmund (to Alex):   "You don't let me see my brother, you haven't seen angry."  (He then threatens Silbert)  "And what's the penalty for filing a phony death certificate?"

Alexandra:  "He was following my instructions."

Edmund:  "Oh, that's great. That's great. The two of you in this together. You're trying to find a cure for my brother? I wouldn't be surprised if you were in there working on some bogus medical experiment using my brother as a guinea pig."

Alexandra:  "You know that's not true. The procedure may be experimental, but it's been throughly researched."

Edmund:  "Look, okay, Alexandra, you want to do the right thing? Let me see my brother."

Alexandra:  "I have to warn you that what you see may shock you. He's extremely weak."

Edmund:  "You just toLd me he's alive. You can't shock me."

Dr. Silbert:   "The medication has partially restored his brain function, but his responses may often seem erratic, inappropriate."

Edmund (eagerly):   "That's fine, doc. That's the Dimitri I know."

Alexandra:   "What we're trying to say is that the restorative effects of the drugs may just be temporary."

Edmund:  "Okay, Okay, I hear what you're saying. You're giving me the worst case senario. BottoM line... my brother is alive, and that is enough for me."

Alexandra:  "Is It enough for Dimitri, I Wonder. Can you just give me a few minutes to get him prepared for your visit?"

Edmund (firmly):   "No."

Alexandra:  "All right. Follow me. Let's go."

(The scene fades out, returns later as they enter the room.  Edmund stands in the doorway with his hand on the know, staring at his brother asleep in the bed. Alex looks at Edmund, then pulls a screen part way in front of the door.  Edmund slowly closes the door and gets behind the screen, with his head peeking out to observe Alex and Dimitri.   She then goes over and sits on the bed, looking down loving at Dimitri.)

Alexandra:  "Hi, Sweetheart."  (Dimitri slowly opens his eyes. Because of his condition alot of his speech is slurred and he breathes heavily.)

Dimitri:  "Hi... my wife."

Alexandra:  "How are you feeling?"

Dimitri:  "On top of the world, Ma."  (She laughs lightly.)

Alexandra:   "We've done another workup, and there's been some improvement..."

Dimitri (interrupting her):  "How is... Ed and Gill?"  (Edmund's fixated on their conversation.)

Alexandra:   "They love you very much. It's been very difficult to keep this from them."

Dimitri:  "You Must."  (He starts to get agitated.)

Alexandra:   "Yes, I know."

Dimitri:  "(You) Promised."

Alexandra (talking quickly):  "I know, darling, but since there's been an improvement, I'm thinking that it's only fair. They would want to know. Darling..."

Dimitri:   "No."  (He grabs her shoulds, upset.)

Alexandra:  "You need them. You need their support."

Dimitri (very upset now): "Not like this. Can't see me like this."

Alexandra (wincing in pain from how hard he's gripping her shoulders):  "Sweetheart, please..."

Dimitri:  "No, not like this..."

Alexandra (trying to prying his hands off her shoulders):  "Oh, Dimitri... Dimitri, let go, you're hurting me."amc990908.jpg (15015 bytes)

Dimitri (ignoring her plea):  "Promise, promise..."

Alexandra:   "Dimitri, you're hurting me."

Dimitri:   "Promise me."

Alexandra:   "Darling, let go."

Dimitri:  "No, no, no, no..."

Alexandra (gasping in pain, unable to pry free from his grip):  "Let go. Let go."

(Upset, Edmund rushes out from his hiding spot and pulls Alex away from Dimitri's grip)  Edmund: "Dimitri, let her go..."

Seeing his brother's face, Dimitri recoils back in anguish, turning his face sideways, trying to hide himself, but he can't. The scene fades out, then returns later... Groaning, Dimitri's closing his eyes as Alex is shooting some thing into his IV to sedate him.

Alexandra (to Dimitri):  "Take deep breaths, deep breaths, sweetheart."  (Dimitri groans groggily.)  "It's all right. You're going to rest now. everything's all right. Okay?  Shh."  (She touches his collar lovingly, staring down at him.   She then turns to Edmund, who's quietly waiting them.)  "Oh. He doesn't know his own strength when he gets agitated."

Edmund (staring at her, apologetic):   "I'm sorry."

Alexandra (looking up at him):  "I wanted to tell you."

Edmund:  "I know. Are you all right?"

Alexandra:   "Umm. I'm Fine. He'll come around in a little while. Unfortunately, he won't remember anything."

Edmund:  "What? what do you mean?"

Alexandra:   "Well, Edmund, there has been some deterioration in his motor skill, in his short term memory.  We're hoping that the treatment will resolve some of that, but there's no guarantees."

Edmund:  "I'll be here when he wakes up."  (He looks down at Dimitri.)

Alexandra:   "Well, you can't." (She lightly toches Edmund's shoulder.) "You saw the way he reacted."

Edmund:  "You need help, Alexandra."

Alexandra:  "I have help."

Edmund:   "Alexandra..."

Alexandra:  "I have an entire staff."

Edmund:  "I... you can't handle this all by yourself, Okay? Now, I know you love him, and I know that you're his wife, but he's my brother."

Alexandra (staring intently at him):  "This is very difficult for you to accept. But the best thing you could do for him is to walk out that door and never come back."

Thescene fades out, then returns later where a determined Edmund refuses to go.

Edmund:  "I'm not leaving him alone."

Alexandra (takes a deep breath and says in admiration as she stares at Dimitri):  "Your brother.   Proudest ever met. The Sheer force of his personality. He'd walk into a room and all eyes would flash his way because he demanded it... He deserved it. He was Dimitri Marick. Pay attention... and we all did. But now..."

Edmund:  "But now what? He's ill, so we should just forget him, just leave him?"

Alexandra:  "Of course not. But we have to respect his wishes. You know how painful this is for him, for you to see him like this?"

Edmund: "Well, he let you see him."

Alexandra:  "But I was his doctor before I was his wife."

Edmund:  "Well, he's just going to have to get over it because he's my brother and I'm going to take care of him."

Alexandra:  "And I applaud that. I do. But, you know, it has been my expericence... and I'm talking now as a doctor, not just as your sister-in-law... that there are some people who simply cannot make the adjustment. It's too fundamental to them... Who they werein the world. They cannot make the transition... or they won't."

Edmund:   "Alexandra, I know my brother, Okay? I know he's stubborn. I know he's proud. But we've been down this road before. We've had hard times and things he's had to accept. And he can do this. I know he can."

Alexandra (lowering her voice a bit):  "Listen, you're going to have to promise me that you won't tell him I toLd you this. He wanted to kill himself. He'd written letters to all of you to be mailed in the event of his death. I still have them. He was going to go off to Vadzel, up some mountain or whatever."

Edmund (smiles patronizingly at her):  "Oh. Okay. That's not -- ahem. That's Dimi. Okay? That is such a Dimitri move, a grand final gesture, which by the way, was for your benefit. He was never really, really going to do it."

Alexandra (not convinced):   "Maybe, maybe not. I have treated hundreds of patientS with fatal diseases, and sometimes taking their own life, it gives them back a sense of control."

Edmund:  "I feel for you. Okay? I really do. It's hard enough to be  his brother. But the bottom line is I'm not going to leave you aLone here to deal with this."

Dimitri (groaning, comes to):  "Edmund?"

The scene fades out, then returns later...

Edmund (sits down on the bed and smiles loving at his brother):  "You know, if I wasn't so glad to see you..."  (Dimitri murmers something incomprehensible, ignoring Edmund, and stares accusingly over at Alex, who's standing at the foot of the bed. Edmund glances over at Alex, who stares ashamedly back at Dimitri. Both are ignoring Edmund's presence.)

Edmund (to Dimitri):   "Hey. hey, this is not her fault. Don't look at her that way, Okay? Dimi, you know me. You know me. I can't rest until I figure everything out. I followed here here, Okay? It's not her fault."

Dimitri (to Edmund):   "I want you to go."

Edmund:  "Not a chance. Hey, come on. I've finally got you where I want you. You can't say no to me." (Dimitri takes deep breaths, staring again only at Alex who worriedly stares back.)

Edmund:  "I'm going to take care of you."

Dimitri (starting to get upset again):  "No!"

Edmund:  "Forget no. I love you."

Dimitri: "No..."

Edmund:   "Gillian loves you. Everybody loves you, Dimitri. Dimitri, this is a miracle. You... you're alive and you're going to get better and you're going to get..."

Dimitri (pleading with his wife to stop Edmund):  "Alexandra..."  (She looks at him hopelessly.)

Edmund (continuing, ignoring Dimitri's plea):  "...better than ever. and we do it my way, Okay? We do it my way."

Dimitri (to Alex):   "stop..."

Edmund:  "Let me take you home."

Dimitri (finishing his sentence):  "...him."

Alexandra (gently to Edmund, who's got his back to her):  "Edmund, Edmund..."

Edmund (ignoring them both):  "We'll put you in the hunting lodge."

Dimitri (to Alex, getting more worked up):  "Stop..."

Edmund:  "The west..."

Dimitri:   "..him! Alexandra!"  (He's really upset now.)

Alexandra (starts to move towards them):  "All right. Okay, all right, sweetheart."

Edmund (pleading with Dimitri, who's only staring at Alex): "Please..."

Alexandra (rushes over between the brothers and cups Dimitri's face in her hands, trying to calm him down.):   "All right, all right. All right, shh. All right, sweetheart. Don't worry. Shh, shh."

Dimitri (to Alex):   "him!"  (Poor Edmund looks on helplessly.)

Alexandra (calming Dimitri down):  "Shh, shh, shh, shh.  It's all right. it's all right, sweetheart. Shh, Shh, Shh. Okay."
